Occasionally, your iPad and Square reader may experience random disconnections. However, there's no need to worry! Here's a few simple steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
To connect your Square reader to your iPad via Bluetooth, follow these steps:
1. Open the Square App.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Click on Card Readers.
4. Connect to your reader.
5. Select the Chip reader.
6. Hold the power button for 3 seconds until the 4 flashing orange lights appear, then release. Your reader will automatically connect to your Bluetooth.
If the above steps don't suffice to fix the issue, please continue troubleshooting with these steps:
- When ready to checkout, always open Square app BEFORE pressing "Process" button in checkout.
- If Reader isn't connected press the button once on the reader.
- If Reader still doesn't connect, double tap the iPad home button and "swipe away" the Square app to close it.
- Ensure the reader proximity and battery level: Make sure it's within 10 feet of your device and check the battery level by pressing the button on your Square Reader once. If the battery indicator blinks red, it means it's low.
- Resetting the reader might help: Hold down the power button for approximately 20 seconds. The lights on the reader will flash orange, then red, and then they will stop flashing. Do not let go of the power button until after the red lights have stopped flashing.
- Reopen the Square app and press the button on the reader.
- Reset: If Reader still isn't connected press and hold the button on the Reader for 20 seconds to reset it.
- If none of the above have fixed it:
a. Check the app store for updates: Open the App Store > tap your profile icon. Scroll down to see pending updates. Tap Update All to update all apps on your device, or locate the Square app and tap Update.
b. Restart the iPad or put it briefly in airplane mode and back.
c. Uninstall Square app and install back.
